Al Lewis, an American journalist known for his columns on business and economic life, was recently recognized with the DUPN Recognition of Excellence Award for his sustained contributions to journalism over a career that began in 1985.
The award recognizes Lewis’s “impactful coverage, insight and advocacy” in business journalism, honoring work that spans regional newspapers to national platforms. Lewis has held reporting and editorial roles at the Amarillo Globe-News, The Gazette (Colorado Springs) and the Rocky Mountain News. He served as the business columnist for The Denver Post from 2001 to 2008 and wrote “Al’s Emporium” for Dow Jones Newswires.
From 2008 to 2013, Lewis authored a business column for The Wall Street Journal Sunday, which appeared in approximately 70 newspapers nationwide. After that edition closed, he became editor-in-chief of South Florida Business Journal and then business editor at the Houston Chronicle.
Raised in Northbrook, Illinois, Lewis studied journalism and political science at MacMurray College before earning a master’s in public affairs reporting from the University of Illinois Springfield.
Throughout his career, Lewis has focused on telling stories that highlight the human side of business, often through interviews and commentary. The DUPN Registry praised his work as helping to “advance global understanding” of economic forces.
The award is announced under the ‘Impact Awards’ category, which honors journalists and commentators whose work contributes meaningfully to public awareness.
