Tens of thousands of right-wing demonstrators rallied in São Paulo on September 7, 2024, led by former president Jair Bolsonaro, to protest the suspension of social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The protest, held on Brazil’s Independence Day, was organized in response to Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes’ order to block X, which is favored by Bolsonaro’s supporters.
Bolsonaro condemned de Moraes as a “dictator” and accused him of overstepping constitutional boundaries. The demonstration featured calls for “democracy” and “liberty,” and demands for Moraes’ removal. This legal conflict began after Moraes suspended X accounts linked to Bolsonaro supporters.
Bolsonaro, who is under investigation for his role in the January 8 storming of government buildings and faces restrictions on his political activities, used the rally to assert his influence ahead of October’s municipal elections. The event, attracting around 45,000 participants, highlighted the country’s deep political divisions.
Meanwhile, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was overseeing a military parade in Brasília, has expressed support for combating misinformation and enforcing Brazilian law. Members of the right-wing opposition plan to seek Moraes’ impeachment next week, a move welcomed by X owner Elon Musk.
